Tangiwai disaster

Destroyed railway bridge at Tangiwai

At 10.21 p.m. on Christmas Eve 1953 the Wellington–Auckland Train flew off the tracks into the Whangaehu River in Tangiwai.

There were 285 passengers on board the train at the time 151 of those 285 passengers died. It is known as one of NZs worst railway accident.

Death of poet James K. Baxter


On the 22 of October 1972 the most accomplished poet James K. Baxter died .
He died in Auckland at the age of 46 soon after leaving the commune he had founded
in Jerusalem several years before.
Most of his time was spent looking after drug dealers and alcoholics.

Chief Justice declares treaty 'worthless' and a 'simple nullity








On the 17th of October 1997 Chief Justice Sir James Prendergast declared the Tiriti o waitangi  (The treaty of waitangi) worthless and a simple nullity. The treaty of waitangi was 'worthless' because it had been signed 'between a civilized  nation and a pack of savages who were not capable of signing a treaty.

Main Body of NZEF sails to war



On the 19th of October 1914, during the 1 world war the main body 
of NZEF sailed to war along with ten grey painted troop-ships and
escorted by four warships which all sailed to war. These ships 
carried the Main Body of NZEF, and the First Reinforcements for, 
the New Zealand Expeditionary Force – around 8500 men along with nearly 4000 horses.

Horrible history



On the 15th of October 2007 18 people that were arrested linked to alleged weapons-Training camps near the Bay of Plenty. Police executed search warrants in  Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North and Wellington  after twelve months of surveillance of activist groups.
